  As the elected Sheriff of Darlington County, Michael B. August is directly accountable to the constitution of the United States, the constitution of South Carolina and to the citizens of Darlington County.  Sheriff August is focused on working with all segments of government to serve and protect the citizens of Darlington County.  The role of his administration or command staff is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the various divisions of the sheriff's office and to support him in carrying out his mission of utilizing pro-active policing practices to reduce crime rates in Darlington County.  

Office Manager

 Oversee and assign clerical, administrative responsibilities, and tasks among office staff. Enter and verify payroll.

Responsible for criminal background checks, disposition entries on both warrants and citations.

Property Crimes Unit

 The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division is made up of highly trained investigators with years of experience in law enforcement. The division is responsible for conducting thorough investigations into a wide range of criminal cases across Darlington County. Our goal is to support crime victims, apprehend offenders, and recover stolen property.

 A property crimes investigator is responsible for investigating criminal activities related to property, such as theft, burglary, property damage that are malicious in nature, and arson. Their key duties include, crime scene investigation, evidence collection, conducting interviews, surveillance, collaborating with other agencies, identifying patterns in criminal behavior, and testifying in court. Their roles ensure the thorough investigation of property crimes and supports the prosecution of offenders. 

Violent Crimes Unit

Violent Crimes unit primary duties is to investigate crimes that have caused or may cause great bodily harm or death. The investigator also investigates any deaths that deemed to be suspicious. Violent Crime unit handles most of the people crimes. 

Special Victims Unit

 The Special Victims Unit falls under the Criminal Investigation Division as part of the People Crimes sub-division. Special Victims Investigators are specifically trained to investigate cases that involve rape victims, child victims, domestic violence abuse victims, etc. 

Financial Crime Unit

 A Financial Crimes Investigator is an investigator who is specially trained in white collar crimes including but not limited to: financial transaction frauds, breach of trust, wire fraud, and obtaining goods under false pretenses. They will have knowledge in drafting and serving search warrants, arrest warrants, and prosecuting cases in

They will have knowledge in drafting and serving search warrants, arrest warrants, and prosecuting cases in Magistrate court, as well as testifying in General Session court.

 Tasked with conducting surveillance, undercover buys, and executing search warrants after gathering data and conducting investigations on illegal drug distribution; conduct operations with state, local, and federal agencies.

Patrolling assigned areas and identifying suspicious or illegal activity.  Conducting on-scene investigations and assisting those in need.

 The Civil / Warrant division is responsible for making sure court security is taken care of along with prisoners being transported for court.  The main duties of the evidence department are to archive and curate property related to criminal cases.  This involves inventorying all items that come to the department, logging those items in, storing the items, presenting those items to the courts during trial, returning items to their rightful owner, and disposing of items, as necessary.

S.I.R.T. also focus on tactical solutions that increase the likelihood of de-escalation and

S.I.R.T. also focus on tactical solutions that increase the likelihood of de-escalation and safe resolution of high-risk incidents. The Darlington County Sheriff's Office Special Incident Response Team responds to hostage rescues, active shooter, high-risk search and arrest warrants, barricaded suspects, sniper situations, high-risk apprehension and personal/dignitary protection details.

Bloodhound unit primary duties are to help locate missing people, children, or elderly adults with dementia that wonders off. Our job is to assist deputies with tracking criminals when they flee from law enforcement. We also provide our assistance to other agencies in the area when need it.

Help crime victims by providing referral for appropriate services and support to people in our community who have been affected by a crime. We will also help in filing crime victim compensation through the Department of Crime Victims Compensation. Part of our duties are to assist victims through the various criminal proceedings and provide guidance throughout the criminal justice process.

Sex Offender Registry

The Sex Offender Department is responsible for registering every sex offender that lives within the county. They either report for registry every six months or every three months according to their charge(s). Paperwork must be submitted in a timely manner after registration is complete. 

Training Division

 The training division keeps up with deputies training hours and classes needed for specific job duties.  We make sure deputies are recertified every three years. The training division issues equipment and patrol vehicles. 

Public Information Officer

 The Public Information Officer (PIO) is the direct line of communication between Law Enforcement and the media. As PIO, their duties include Press Releases, Managing Social Media, and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. 

Community Liaison

Community Liaison

 The Community Liaison’s main responsibility is bridging the gap between Law Enforcement and the Community. This consists of creating Community Outreach Programs, attending events, and building a rapport with members of the community.
